Winter Salt Shortage

Contractors and property owners may have a challenging year due to a predicted winter salt shortage that will affect snow and ice removal.

A recent strike at one of the largest salt mines in North America, reduced capacity at another, and a depletion in stockpiles due to the late season storm earlier this year have led to a winter salt shortage.

This shortage will affect contractors and property owners as there are contractual obligations to provide salt to municipalities and provinces. Snow and ice management professionals will be left with a less certain supply.

What can you do?

  1. Plan your salt use wisely: Work with your client(s) to develop a site map indicating which areas should be maintained and at what level of service. Use the measurements from this map to estimate how much salt you'll need - this will help you to make sure you're not over-applying. Ensure you track and document that you're following your plans for each of your sites.
  2. Consider closing non-essential areas of parking lots/sidewalks.
  3. Use alternative materials, such as sand and other abrasives, where appropriate.
