It's okay to soil these undies!

Let's dig in as part of National Soil Conservation Week, April 21 – 27

April 25, 2019 – The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) and the Soil Conservation Council of Canada want to help you find out how healthy your soil is, by burying a pair of cotton underwear in your soil for 2 months.

How-to-Soil-Your-Undies.jpgWhy? Because after 8 weeks, what's left of the buried undies will indicate how healthy your soil is. If a lot of fabric remains, it means your soil could use some help. For farmers in particular, knowing your soil health is essential in developing strategies to increase crop yields.

The “soil your undies" challenge is not new, but this is the first time we're promoting the test in the Lake Simcoe watershed. Our goal is to help farmers, but anyone interested in understanding their soil health can participate.

Since the campaign is also online, you can reveal your results and compare how you fared on social media by using #soilyourundies.

It's easy to participate! Contact Pete Shuttleworth, LSRCA Restoration Technician, and he'll give you FREE pair of new, 100% cotton undies, as well as instructions on how to take part. Our underwear quantities are limited, so get yours today before we run out! Pete can be reached by email at p.shuttleworth@LSRCA.on.ca or by phone at 905-895-1281 ext 114.

And for those who already know your soil could use some help? We offer up to $1,000 towards professional, unbiased soil sampling and nutrient management planning on your farm.

It is the mission of the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority to collaborate, protect and restore the Lake Simcoe watershed with innovative research, policy and action.
