Sections of Durham Regional Forest Trails to be Closed
Selection Tree Thinning from September 24 to December 14, 2018
NEWMARKET – September 24, 2018 – As part of ongoing forest management activities at Durham Regional Forest, the Brookdale Tract, located on Brookdale Road between Concession 7 and Lakeridge Road in Uxbridge, will be closed from September 24 to December 14, 2018 for selection tree thinning.
During the tree thinning period, trail users are asked to follow all instructions on warning signs and to avoid the affected areas for their own safety, the safety of the forest operators and LSRCA staff. All trails will be closed and marked with temporary fencing and/or information signs.
Throughout the thinning process, trail closures will be monitored by LSRCA staff and updated details of the affected areas will be posted on signs at the Brookdale Tract and on our website.
Forest management activities, including thinning, tree assessments, monitoring and reforestation efforts ensure forests remain healthy, productive and safe habitat for diverse wildlife.
At Durham Regional Forest, selection thinning is part of a restoration plan to bring the forest back to its original, pre-settlement condition. Thinning creates small, scattered openings in the forest canopy to allow natural light to reach the ground, supporting growth of hardwood species such as maple, oak and beech.
