Warning: Scanlon Creek Reservoir Unsafe for People and Animals

August 12, 2011 - Newmarket - The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) is warning visitors to Scanlon Creek Conservation Area not to enter the water at the reservoir and to keep their animals away too.

The Scanlon Creek reservoir is experiencing Blue-Green Algae bloom, a naturally occurring condition which can leave chemical toxins in the water. In addition to being harmful to fish, the suspected strain of algae can also be hazardous for people and animals.

Following standard protocol, LSRCA has notified the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of the Environment and Environment Canada and has taken water samples for immediate testing to confirm the strain of bacteria.

Until further notice, signs will be posted at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area and the reservoir, warning people and their pets to stay out of the water.
