Up the Maskinonge, with a Paddle Public Event - September 18
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
Keswick – The Maskinonge River Recovery Project (MRRP) is hosting a free guided paddle event called “Up the Maskinonge, With a Paddle”. The event, to be held on September 18th, rain or shine, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon, is a fun way for residents to enjoy the outdoors and come together to learn more about the Maskinonge River and what can be done to protect and enhance it.
The public is asked to bring a canoe, kayak, paddleboat or any other non-motorized vessel to the launching site in the parking lot of the Keswick Boston Pizza at 253 Queensway South at 9:30 a.m. Even those without a boat are invited. There will be environmental-themed displays and children’s activities including a live animal exhibit.
This is the second year for this event. Last year saw a flotilla of boats paddling through the river up to the bridge at Woodbine Avenue. Over the past year, members of MRRP have been working with landowners along this stretch of the river on shoreline enhancement projects that will improve the quality of the Maskinonge, and ultimately, Lake Simcoe. This year’s tour will highlight some of the projects currently underway.
The Maskinonge River Recovery Project is a community based environmental stewardship project whose partners include the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA), York Environmental Stewardship, Save the Maskinonge and the Towns of Georgina and East Gwillimbury. This project is primarily funded by Environment Canada through the Lake Simcoe Cleanup Fund.
