Spring is for Planting - Barrie residents invited to plant trees in Huronia Park North
NEWMARKET – April 22, 2009 – The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the City of Barrie invite Barrie residents to come out on Saturday May 9 to plant trees in Huronia Park North. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include light refreshments. Organizers hope to get the more than 250 native conifers, hardwoods and shrubs into the ground before 12:00 p.m.
Whiskey Creek and one of its tributaries flow through Huronia Park North. The City of Barrie is fortunate to still have coldwater streams, such as Whiskey Creek, with habitat for fish that prefer cold water like the native Brook Trout. These watercourses are under threat from pollution and deforestation. Planting trees and shrubs along stream banks increases shade and cools the water, while also filtering phosphorus and other pollutants in storm water running off nearby fields, roads and parking lots.
“Planting trees today improves air and water quality, and provides wildlife habitat for generations to come,” said Phil Davies, Manager of Watershed Stewardship, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. “The planting sites in Huronia Park North were chosen because trees and shrubs will provide shade and filter the stream and increase the size of the park’s woodlot. This tree planting event is an opportunity for residents to make a personal and long-lasting contribution to the health of the environment in Barrie.”
The tree planting sites are north of the park’s parking lot off Huronia Road. Volunteer planters will find the conservation authority’s helpful staff near the children’s play area ready to hand out tools and refreshments. They will also provide planting demonstrations and instructions.
Anybody wanting to help is welcome and urged to inform Joan Parsons of the LSRCA so there will be enough food for everyone. In addition, volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor work (sturdy boots and work gloves) and to bring their family, friends and their own shovel (if they have one).
