Decommissioning Unused Wells
The purpose of this program is to help landowners through the process of decommissioning their unused wells for the safety of their family and to prevent groundwater contamination.
Funding
Landowners within the Lake Simcoe watershed may qualify for grants of 100 per cent of project costs for eligible projects, to a maximum of $1,500. Additional funds may be available from other environmental grant funding sources. LSRCA watershed coordinators will ensure that you are made aware of all the grant funding programs available to you.
What projects are eligible?
- Proper plugging of unused wells (dug, bored or drilled) by a well contractor licenced through the Ontario Ministry of the Environment .
- Directory of Licensed Well Contractors/Technicians (Government of Ontario resource).
What costs may be covered?
- Licensed contractor fees and labour or materials associated with well plugging procedures.
What isn't covered?
- Well pumps and water purification or treatment systems.
- Drilling of new wells.
- Any labour and materials for plugging of a well when the work is undertaken by a contractor without a current license through the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
Conditions
- All work must comply with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment procedures for plugging or abandoning unused water wells in accordance with Ontario Regulation 903.
- A minimum of two cost estimates must be submitted with your grant funding application.
- A copy of the well contractor's licence must be submitted with yourgrant funding application.
- If you have an outstanding violation with the LSRCA or any other regulatory agency, you may not be eligible.
