Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation
About Our Lake
What is Needed to Restore Our Watershed's Health?

  1. Adequate protection measures
We need measures and laws to ensure that, even as development increases, pollutants such as phosphorus remain below sustainable targets.
    • There must be adequate Provincial policy to support the findings in the provincially funded LSRCA Assimilative Capacity Study (ACS)
    • Best Management Practices on future growth in Lake Simcoe are essential

  2. Restoration programs
We need to work to undo the damage caused by years of pollution, development and neglect.
    • Forest cover must be increased to at least 25%, to help clean the water draining into the Lake, and to clean our air
    • Eroded streambanks and shorelines must be repaired to reduce silt, sediment and phosphorus from entering the Lake
    • Old stormwater management ponds must be upgraded to address the quantity and the quality of water draining into the Lake
    • Expertise and funding must be provided to rural landowners to help store manure properly, decommission wells and implement best management practices on their property
