Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation
Western Creek Restoration Celebration Event

On Tuesday November 10th, the Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation, along with The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, hosted a walking tour and ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Western Creek Restoration Project, and to recognize its our partners - RBC and the Town of Newmarket.

A comprehensive plan to restore and protect the East Holland Watershed exists and LSRCA is already implementing stewardship projects as part of that plan. There was a box culvert at the mouth of Western creek that had retaining walls that were failing. The box culvert was perched and was preventing several species of fish from migrating upstream.

Our partners collaborated with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation on the removal of the box culvert. There is now an open span bridge and river-banks that were stabilized using bioengineering techniques including the installation of river stone and native plantings. Creek bed enhancements included the installation of small boulders along the banks to promote fish habitat and stabilization.
