Our Projects

The Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation (LSCF) invests in projects designed to protect and restore Lake Simcoe.

Working in partnership with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA), watershed municipalities and other government partners, as well as stakeholder groups including concerned landowners, farmers, businesses and residents we enable vital work to be done that maintains the natural environment, and in many places return the land and the rivers and the streams to a natural state.

Working with all of its partners extends the reach of LSCF's efforts well beyond the shoreline of Lake Simcoe and up each of the rivers and creeks that feed the Lake.

With the help of the LSCF, LSRCA and its partners have completed more than 800 projects to protect and restore Lake Simcoe and its watershed since 1990.

Restoration and protection projects are going on throughout the watershed and are carried out by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA).

Here are just a few of the current programs and projects:
  • East Holland River
We are pleased to be providing additional funding for private landowners through the Landowner Environmental Assistance Program (LEAP).

Your donations are also providing assistance with the implementation of a comprehensive five-year action plan which includes a variety of restoration projects and co-ordination between LSRCA, LSCF and other municipal partners working together to restore this important watercourse.

  • Eastern Creek
A 185-metre long section of Newmarket's Eastern Creek, adjacent to Southlake Regional Health Centre, has been restored and fish habitat vastly improved.

The project is the result of one year of planning and consultation, and a significant collaborative effort between a number of partner organizations, including: The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Southlake Regional Health Centre, The Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation, The Regional Municipality of York (through the Landowner Environmental Assistance Program) The Town of Newmarket, The Government of Canada (through Environment Canada), York Environmental Stewardship, The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, York Bassmasters and The Bogart Creek Restoration Committee.

  • Kidds Creek
In partnership with the City of Barrie and the LSRCA, 300 metres of streamchannel in downtown Barrie has been restored and fish habitat vastly improved.

  • Protected Wetlands
Continuing efforts to preserve natural spaces in our watershed is critical to the health of Lake Simcoe. Wetlands create corridors and habitat for wildlife, assist in flood control and provide recreational opportunities. Your donation helped to secure 62.88 ha (155.37 acres) of the Beaver River Wetland.

  • Restoration of Burl's Creek in Oro Medonte
This creek restoration project carried out by LSRCA improved fish habitat, cooled the water and reduced phosphorus levels entering Lake Simcoe from this tributary.

  • Conservation Education
Over 8,000 children per year participate in environmental programs at the Professor E.A. Smith Education Centre at Scanlon Creek. This centre is run by the LSRCA staff and provides hands-on learning opportunities in a natural setting. These programs work to ensure that future generations become responsible environmental stewards.
